The State Police Academy, Odisha, headed by an officer in the rank of D.I.G. of Police, designated as Deputy Director, SPA was established in the year 1981 at the premises of Police Training College, Angul. In the year 1985, the Academy was shifted to a rented building at Tulasipur, Cuttack. In the year 1986, the post of DIG & Deputy Director, SPA was upgraded to the rank of I.G. of Police and was designated as Spl. I.G. of Police, Training, Coordination & Director, SPA vide General Administration. Department, Government of Odisha. Letter No.9626/AIS-I, dt.17.11.1986.






Subsequently, the post of Spl. I.G. of Police, Training & Director, SPA was upgraded to the rank of Addl. D.G. of Police, Training. In the year 1993, the S.P.A. was shifted from the rented house to portion of the office of the D.I.G. of Police, Central Range, Cuttack at Reserve Police Lines, Buxi Bazar, Cuttack and the office of the D.I.G. of Police, Training and Development was merged with the S.P.A.










Hon'ble Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik, not only laid the foundation Stone of the State Police Academy on the auspicious birthday of the great statesman of the Country Biju Patnaik on 5.3.01, but also inaugurated its own building at Ransinghpur, Bhubaneswar on the same celebrated day of 5.3.05. The Academy is also proud to have the Hon'ble Chief Minister on the passing out parade ceremony of the 1st batch of direct recruit Cadet SIs of Odisha Police at the Academy on 09.09.09.






Academy has been dedicated to the memory of the legendary leader of the State Late Biju Patnaik and is renamed as Biju Patnaik State Police Academy (BPSPA). Police Officers from the rank of Asst. Sub-Inspector of Police to Addl. Supdt. of Police including IPS probationers are being trained in this Academy.
